#Learningfromthebest

by Sailing Through Life In My Boatshoes

Last week in my strategic planning class we had a guest speaker, Dana Lewis, and it was evident within the first minutes of her speech why our teacher picked her to come talk to us. Lewis is only a few years out of college and already has a dream job working for Swedish Medical Center in Seattle as the social media manager.

Even more impressive is her entire career started with a simple hashtag back when she was a student at the University of Alabama.

Lewis knew that she wanted to work in the health care industry but like most students she had no idea how she was going to get her dream job. So she simple started networking on Twitter with doctors. Every Sunday night she would set up the hashtag, #hcsm, and this allowed doctors to connect with each other through Twitter. Multiple companies saw this movement and immediately offered her jobs, but she chose Swedish for her employment.

This story gives hope to all undergraduates. In every class, especially journalism classes, our teachers lecture about the growing importance of social media, but this is the first concrete example of social media actually working as a gateway to employment.  Now when a teacher discusses the importance of Twitter I have a real-life example to follow.
